Animal Prints In The Blues – Color Chat
Blue is the color that talks to my
heart. I was born and raised in Greece, and it seems as if blue itself is native
to that land. Blue is everywhere. The sea is filled with it the sky is spread
with it–and not your typical deep blue but a clear, rich, eternal blue
that speaks to the soul. I don’t know if you find that anywhere else.
Blue teams well with white – most noticeably on the Greek flag,
but equally at home in the charming domiciles found on nearly every
Greek island. Who can forget those brilliant blue domes rising above
white-washed walls and looking out over the Aegean Sea!
The universal popularity of blue refreshes both art and
architecture: Danish tiles, French toiles, Spanish mosaics,
Mexican doors, New England porches, Greek domes, Egyptian pottery,
and English China, are just a few of the diverse applications with blue.
Blue is in the cool range on the color wheel and gives a sense
of relaxation and calmness wherever it’s applied. As a wall color for
bedrooms and bathrooms it’s considered refreshing and soothing at
the same time. In textiles we see blue freely used in formal velvets and
damasks, and in fresh cottons and linens that can either be a bold or
pastel elegance. Wallcoverings have many great shades of blue too,
and, depending on the style, speak different languages and eras of
history.
Animal Prints are following right behind by infusing blue tones
into textures, patterns, and products. While researching Animal Prints
in cool shades, I was surprised at the variety of textures and the whimsy
of patterns as well as the selection of materials available. In upholstery,
chenille is predominant and most desired for its softness and endurance.
In linens and cottons we see a big variety of scale, from tiny cheetah
and croco prints up to large giraffe spots and zebra stripes.
So feel free to throw a splash of color wherever you need and still use
your animal print favorites. In fact, you can play with any hue of the color
wheel using blues.
