The Extraordinary Surfaces of Maya Romanoff

“Life and Beauty are the only two rules.”
- Maya Romanoff
Sublime fusions of ancient technique and contemporary opulence, surfaces created by artist and inventor Maya Romanoff are distilled from archeology, anthropology, metallurgy, Woodstock-era psychedelia- and sheer existential joy. Maya’s earliest works included monumental hand-dyed textile installations, materialistic (literally) “wearable art”, and the hedonistic luxury of “interior parks:” complete textile environments based on the idea of “…making art that is not so much objectified as occupied.” Right above, we see an exquisite Mother of Pearl Shell wall tile surface.

The Maya Romanoff foundation was founded in1969 to bring the possibilities of functional art to a broader audience. In 1988, another dynamic visionary, Joyce Lehrer (Romanoff) joined the company. She has focused on expanding markets and refining production techniques to sustain consistent quality, durability, and artisanal hand-at scale. Together Joyce and Maya have built an American institution that produces some of the most intensely beautiful-and useful- surfacing material available to architects and designers across the world.
