The magic of Art

One of the most common ‘problems’ I discover when I do Interior Design house calls, is the absence of ART. You see beautiful pieces of furniture next to a bunch of bare walls. The idea of using Art is scary for most people not familiar with it. I have no idea about art or it’s too expensive is the common refrain. Homeowners would rather invest in the latest flat screen TV than “wasting” their money on a piece of Art.

Art and accessories are the essential finishing touches of any design project. The spirit and soul of art can make a house home. And if Fine Art is your cup of tea, great, but Art doesn’t need to be expensive to do the trick. The wide variety of art can set the tone and give character to any room.

Traditional or contemporary, bold or subdued, colorful or monochromatic, take your pick.

Designer’s tips

Height – Don’t hang art too high; try always to keep it at eye level.
Placement – You can place the Art in more places than just over the sofa. Asymmetrical balance is artful on its own. Think out of the box.
Scale – Be aware of the scale of the art in proportion with the size of the wall; small pictures in the middle of large walls are a no-no.
Grouping – Keep many small pieces of art together. See if you can create a story by coupling them as a group.
Balance – If the art is the focal point, let the rest of the room ‘be quiet’.
Frames – They can either enhance or ruin the quality of the art. A frame can be the art itself—if so, the actual art should be simple and understated.
Style – Dare to use contemporary art in traditional settings and vice versa. In both cases, be very careful with the selection of the frame.
