The 10 “Must Haves” For The Dining Room

1. Warm palatable colors. Reds and pinks stimulate conversation and open the appetite, yellow and spices promote good mood and cheerfulness. If you want a richer effect than plain paint, the industry offers many wall covering solutions, faux paintings for more texture, and beautiful wallpapers for a desirable atmosphere.

2. A tasty rug. Although today many homeowners choose carpet for the entire house for budget reasons, a good rug for the dining room is a great investment and will create an anchor in the room. Make sure that your rug is bigger than the size of the table and the chairs together and will allow about 20” more rug surface when chairs are completed drawn to the table.

3. Comfortable seating. Nothing beats a chair you can relax in while enjoying dinner and talking to your guests. Depending on the size of your chairs, allow a 24” clearance from the surrounding walls or other furniture.

4. Adjustable seating. Owning a table that offers more than one size dimension is always ideal. When you buy your dining room chairs invest in an extra pair– two more than the regular number around the smallest size of your table. Then when you don’t entertain, you can place them on either side of the buffet or server if the room permits, or use them around the house as  occasional chairs.

5. Flexible lighting. Different occasions require different lighting. Give yourself the option to dim the chandelier if you need to, or use a set of luminaries or wall sconces for warmer ambient  lighting. If your chandelier is too bright add some adaptable shades to cover the candles. They cut the glare significantly.

6. Furniture for storage, serving and display. Depending on your room allowance invest in at least one piece of storage, like a buffet or china cabinet and one place for serving. Serving surfaces are very handy and will allow you a “buffet” type of dining when you entertain.

7. Wall art and mirror. Wall art is a must for every dining room outfit. It adds color and can give the “feel” of the room. Mirrors, as we all know, add dimension and enlarge any room. In the dining room, mirrors will reflect the existing light.

8. Beautiful linens and place-settings. The tabletop design sets the mood of the dining. Setting a table is an art on its own and can create the whole atmosphere or theme. What designer doesn’t love to present a table dressed up for royalty!

9. Soft window treatments. Although shutters and shades will give you lots of privacy, draperies are very important for the completion of the room. Whether you have a bay or individual windows there are numerous window treatment designs that can compliment the room. Draperies add softness and color and will outline the style and the formality of the room.

10. Candles and flowers. Add a warm, soft touch with candles, or inject some life with a beautiful bunch of flowers. Avoid plastic flowers and artificial greenery. Although they are very popular, they take away from a sense of beauty and class.
